According to Portuguese newspaper O Jogo, Primeira Liga champions Benfica have opted not to sign Arsenal forward Joel Campbell on a permanent deal, after the Gunners allegedly said he would cost €10million.
The report claims Benfica were interested in signing the Costa Rica international on loan but that Arsenal were keen to sell the 22-year-old.
It goes on to claim Benfica assessed the option to buy and opted against it, leaving Campbell’s future in doubt with the January transfer window now in its 17th day.
Campbell had an outstanding previous loan spell at Greek side Olympiakos, where he scored 11 goals and provided 12 assists; form that suggested he could have a bright future in North London.
When he went on to impress for his country at the World Cup, those expectations only increased, but since returning to the Emirates Stadium Campbell has failed to hold down a regular starting spot.
The Arsenal forward – competing with plenty of top-class talent – has made just four Premier League appearances to date. But if the latest report is true, it will take €10million to prise him away from Arsenal for good.
