The England international will play his first senior game at St James Park today, three years after leaving the club.
Their 1-0 victory over Manchester United at Old Trafford last week saw Southampton climb to third in the table, and they look ready to gatecrash the Premier League party in the top four this season - with regular contenders United, Arsenal, Liverpool, Spurs and Everton all trailing in their wake.
One other team who have flirted with the top four in recent times is Newcastle, so this remains a very important fixture.
For one Southampton player it is perhaps a bigger game than most.
Goalkeeper Fraser Forster joined Southampton from Celtic in the summer, but started his career at Newcastle United.
After seven years with Newcastle he left permanently in 2012 for Glasgow, following a two year loan spell at the SPL side.
Newcastle had decided to go with Tim Krul in the battle for supremacy so Forster was forced to look elsewhere for the good of his career.
Today however will see him return to St James Park, where he never made a first-team appearance for the club as a player.
So here is a small gallery of the Southampton star in his Newcastle days, as he looks to keep his old club out this evening.
