Ex-Chelsea man Michael Essien unlikely to renew AC Milan contract

The Ghana international looks set to be a free agent this summer after his agent confessed a new deal at the San Siro was unlikely.

Former Chelsea midfielder Michael Essien looks set to be a free agent this summer, with his agent admitting that the Ghana international is unlikely to pen a contract extension with AC Milan.

The 32-year-old’s current deal expires in the summer and with no negotiations over a renewal, Fabrizio Ferrari has confessed that his client could well be looking for a new club in the near future.

"I do not think that he will prolong his contract, he is happy at Milan and could stay but I doubt that this will happen,” the agent told Gazzetta dello Sport.

“It is difficult to predict what will happen in June.”

Essien was on Chelsea’s books for nine years but left to join the Rossoneri on a short-term deal last January. He also spent a season on loan at Real Madrid under former boss Jose Mourinho.

Since moving to Italy the African midfielder has only started eight Serie A games, with others preferred in the club’s central midfield.

Essien won two Premier League titles during his times with the Blues, but suffered from a number of serious injuries which inhibited his physical style of play.
