The former Argentina head coach has stated in the Spanish press that despite the recent Ballon d’Or decision, his compatriot is the game’s top star.
Cristiano Ronaldo was awarded the Ballon d’Or accolade earlier this week for the second consecutive year, with the Real Madrid man now able to claim he has been voted by football’s most influential people as the best player on the planet.
The Portugal international has now been crowned with the prestigious award on three occasions and for the last two years running, while perennial rival Lionel Messi has won it four times.
The Barcelona man came second in the reckoning, with few begrudging Ronaldo of the award after his impressive 2014 for the European champions.
However, despite this, former Argentina head coach Cesar Luis Menotti has expressed his opinion that Messi is still the best player on the planet.
The 76-year-old, who led his nation to World Cup triumph in 1978, has stated that his compatriot is a superior player to Ronaldo.
"I still believe that Messi is the best in the world,” Menotti is quoted in Spanish newspaper Sport.
“He has has a special magic. He joins in with team play more than Cristiano Ronaldo.”
The South American went on to state that he felt that Manuel Neuer should have been given the 2014 Ballon d’Or.
Messi and Ronaldo will continue their personal rivalry this year as Barcelona and Real Madrid compete for supremacy in both Spain and on the continent.
