Liverpool left Villa Park with a 2-0 win yesterday afternoon and Can was the subject of praise from his manager after once again settling into an unfamiliar role at centre-back.
And it is the 21-year-old's versatility, in particular, that has allowed him to put in a measured display against Aston Villa striker Christian Benteke, according to Rodgers.
"Look at Emre Can today, what a wonderful player he is. He's a central midfield player but his composure, calmness and strength a number of times against Benteke was impressive," the Northern Irishman told reporters.
The improvement in Can and a number of other summer signings recently will no doubt be a sign of great encouragement for the Liverpool boss.
In Can's defence, the German never really looked off form - he was simply hampered by fitness and injuries. The 21-year-old is looking better than ever, though, and surprisingly as part of a back three.
Have Liverpool turned the corner?
It is perhaps too soon to say, with it being important to note they have just played two very lacklustre sides indeed in Sunderland and Aston Villa. But these are the kind of teams the Reds weren't beating before. And there is no doubting Liverpool are looking a much better outfit than at the start of the campaign.
