Sunderland and Toronto fans react on Twitter to Jozy Altidore's move

Jozy Altidore

A collection of the best Twitter reactions to Jozy Altidore's MLS return from Sunderland and Toronto FC fans.

After netting just three goals in 53 total appearances for Sunderland, it’s fair to say that most supporters were far from disappointed to see Jozy Altidore leave the Stadium of Light on Friday.

Signed from AZ Alkmaar in the summer of 2013 for around £6 million, Altidore’s scoring struggles saw him become a figure of derision among Premier League fans during his time in the North East, and it was clear over the first few months of this season that there was no place for him in manager Gus Poyet’s long-term plans.

Now heading to Toronto FC in a swap deal for the unsettled Jermain Defoe, a fresh start back in MLS could be just what’s needed to get his once-promising career back on track, having proven more than capable of scoring in the States as a teenager.

A rising star with the New York Red Bulls, the US international notched 16 goals in 41 games between 2006 and 2008, before sealing a then-league-record $10 million move to Villarreal, and TFC fans will hoping for even better numbers this time around.

Nevertheless, there are a few who don’t appear all that enthusiastic about his addition judging from the sentiment on Twitter to the deal, while you’d be hard-pressed to find a Sunderland fan disappointed in nabbing Defoe in exchange.

Here are some of the best reactions from both sets of supporters…
