After netting just three goals in 53 total appearances for Sunderland, it’s fair to say that most supporters were far from disappointed to see Jozy Altidore leave the Stadium of Light on Friday.
Signed from AZ Alkmaar in the summer of 2013 for around £6 million, Altidore’s scoring struggles saw him become a figure of derision among Premier League fans during his time in the North East, and it was clear over the first few months of this season that there was no place for him in manager Gus Poyet’s long-term plans.
Now heading to Toronto FC in a swap deal for the unsettled Jermain Defoe, a fresh start back in MLS could be just what’s needed to get his once-promising career back on track, having proven more than capable of scoring in the States as a teenager.
A rising star with the New York Red Bulls, the US international notched 16 goals in 41 games between 2006 and 2008, before sealing a then-league-record $10 million move to Villarreal, and TFC fans will hoping for even better numbers this time around.
Nevertheless, there are a few who don’t appear all that enthusiastic about his addition judging from the sentiment on Twitter to the deal, while you’d be hard-pressed to find a Sunderland fan disappointed in nabbing Defoe in exchange.
Here are some of the best reactions from both sets of supporters…
Altidore playing at a lower level might just be the thing that kicks his career back on track #TFC— Dipal Patel (@dipalpatel77) January 16, 2015
Ignoring wages etc, on the face of it, getting to swap Defoe for Altidore is quite remarkable. #safc— David Coverdale (@dpcoverdale) January 16, 2015

I'm one of a very small group of people who can say they saw Jozy Altidore score in a Sunderland shirt #SAFC— A (@KagoulKing) January 16, 2015
Altidore is right where his quality and game belongs. He will be juuuuust fine #TFC— Brad Humber (@djcuse) January 16, 2015
Can't believe we've swapped Altidore for Defoe. Sunderland don't do good transfer business, this is strange #SAFC— Andrew McManus (@Andy_Mc_4) January 16, 2015
Altidore has the attributes of a striker that can dominate MLS and finally #tfc has a guy who can win aerial battles. Very excited.— J. (@Le_Jdot) January 16, 2015
So we swapped Altidore for Defoe, that's surely got to be the best transfer since transfers began? #safc— paula hudson (@Paula_H25) January 16, 2015
I'm optimistic about Altidore. Who knows whether or not this will work out but he's at least equal to someone who couldn't wait to leave.— Paul Marhue (@greypaul) January 16, 2015
Does Altidore now go down as one of our worst ever signings? #SAFC— Neil Smith (@Discopants09) January 16, 2015
Bradley backing up Altidore? TFC is looking pretty golden right now. #TFC— Chris Lennox (@chrislennox) January 16, 2015
#SAFC Altidore is off to the MLS. If he is driving the plane to his new club, he'll miss the target— Daniel Jenks (@danjsafc) January 16, 2015
