Carragher touts Premier League star as ideal defensive midfielder for Arsenal

Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher wrote in his Sky Sports blog that Southampton's Morgan Schneiderlin is the perfect type of midfielder for Arsenal to sign

Jamie Carragher has told Sky Sports that he believes Southampton enforcer Morgan Schneiderlin could be the perfect player for Arsenal as they look to improve their midfield.

According to the Independent last week, the Gunners had no intention of halting their pursuit for the French international, but know a deal in January would be unlikely due to Southampton's unwillingness to allow the player to leave midway through the season.

Nevertheless, the reports that the North London side were still interested in the defensive midfielder lead to supporters speculating whether he would be a good choice for Arsene Wenger when looking to improve the side, with one fan asking the thoughts of Sky Sports' panelist Jamie Carragher.

''He [Schneiderlin] would be the perfect type of player,'' Carragher said . ''A lot of clubs have been to Southampton and taken their players - unfortunately for Southampton they are not one of the giants so players will always move on.

''You imagine Schneiderlin will move on in the summer because he is playing so well and Southampton are, too. I am sure they will get big money for him and that is the type of signing that a club like Arsenal needs, to fill that role.''

The 25-year-old has been one of the stand-out players in the Premier League this season and has been integral in helping the Saints to their current third place position.

Although questions have been asked of whether or not Ronald Koeman’s men could stand the test of time, with more than half-the-season gone, the South Coast side still find themselves residing inside the Champions League qualification spots in the Premier League and have shown no signs of slowing down.

In comparison, Arsenal have had an inconsistent season which has seen cries for Arsene Wenger to leave his position at the Emirates intensify.

The end of the season for both sides is likely to be put under the microscope and if Koeman can pull off the seemingly impossible, and get Southampton into the Champions League at Arsenal’s expense, then Schneiderlin may remain on the South Coast.
