Report: Manchester United to delay centre back transfer decision until the summer

The Daily Mail claims Manchester United won't try and sign a centre back until the summer.

The Daily Mail has suggested that Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal will delay his search for a new centre back until the summer.

The Mail suggests that Borussia Dortmund’s Mats Hummels, FC Schalke’s Benedikt Howedes and Celtic defender Virgil van Dijk are his priorities, but unlikely to move before the end of the current transfer window.

“Van Gaal will focus on buying a central defender in the summer, with Borussia Dortmund’s Mats Hummels and Shalke’s Benedikt Howedes on his radar. United are also keeping close tabs on Celtic’s Virgil van Dijk,” reports the newspaper.

Signing an extra centre back could provide the side with a much needed boost in their back four.

It would give van Gaal another option in defence and would also provide his team with extra experience in a key area.

Hummels and Howedes would both be excellent choices and they could both inject leadership qualities into the back four, which would help in terms of organisation and setting an example.

Van Dijk may be a little more difficult to acquire, because he plays for another British club, but he’s been a consistent player in Ronny Deila’s team across a variety of competitions.

It will be interesting to see who he pushes for if the Mail’s prediction is accurate.
