Arsenal and Manchester City could be set to battle it out for the signature of FC Lorient left-back Raphael Guerreiro, according to French sports website Le10 Sport.
Guerreiro, 21, joined the Ligue 1 club from Caen in 2013 and has since established himself as one of the top prospects in French football, recording four goals and three assists in 20 top-fight games this season.
The French-born defender made his international debut for Portugal in November, scoring in a 1-0 win over Argentina, and has been compared to Real Madrid star and compatriot Fabio Coentrao due to his marauding runs down the flank.
His impressive performances have not gone unnoticed across Europe, with the Daily Mail reporting Arsenal’s interest earlier this month, and Le10 Sport now adding that the likes of City and Italian giants AC Milan are also among the chasing clubs.
Speaking to fellow French site Foot Mercato last month, Guerrreiro admitted that he is flattered by the recent rumours linking him to some of Europe’s elite clubs, but does not appear too eager to leave Lorient at this moment in time.
“It's always nice to see things like that,” he said. “After when one is focused on his club, we do not do too much attention. It's always nice to hear that stuff.
“It's interesting when you hear things like that, but for now, there is no preference. If I can stay in France initially, for sure I will.”
With a contract running until 2017, Lorient are in no desperate need to sell Guerreiro, but a club of their size will be hard-pressed to resist a sizeable offer from a club like Arsenal or City.
Both Premier League sides appear covered at left-back for the moment, but there always seems room to add an exciting talent should the opportunity present itself.
