Warnock was priceless for Leeds boss Neil Redfearn in terms of his experience and leadership, which Derby will benefit from as he links up with former England manager Steve McClaren.
Warnock played a vital role for Leeds as their left-back because of the width he provided getting forward, as the side have relied on a narrow diamond formation for most of the season.
Warnock has been quoted by Sky Sports as enjoying the buzz and excitement around Derby following his move, which contrasts against the difficult season Leeds have been having where they’ve been forced to dig in at the wrong end of the Championship table.
McClaren has also been quoted by Sky Sports detailing the positives of the player’s experience and it’s important to look at what Derby are gaining as much as what Leeds are missing out on.
Warnock does have Premier League experience and Derby will be in a much stronger position with him in their squad, should they secure promotion to the top flight by the end of the campaign.
The timing of the move certainly doesn’t help Leeds, as their hands have been tied in terms of the players they can attract by a transfer embargo, which has been placed on the club by the Football League.
However, it’s also an opportunity for a young player like Charlie Taylor to step up and make the most of the chances he’ll get to form a part of a Leeds United defence, which could be together over the next few years at the club.
Here’s what Leeds United and Derby County fans on Twitter made of the move when it was confirmed.

Stephen Warnock a great signing for a promotion candidate. Shame the team wants to get into the Premier League not the Championship. #dcfc— Jordan Ruck (@J_Ruck7) January 15, 2015
Stephen Warnock is a great signing. Think its going to knock Fozzy out the starting 11 but he has been a bit off all season.— Woody (@WoodyDCFC) January 15, 2015
Personally think Warnock is a great signing for us. Tonnes of experience, people forget he's been to a World Cup with England.— Clínt (@notclinthurst) January 15, 2015
