Ex-Chelsea man Fernando Torres follows in Lionel Messi’s footsteps

The Atletico Madrid striker scored a brace at the Santiago Bernabeu last night, with the last player to do the same the Barcelona forward.

Former Chelsea forward Fernando Torres played a significant role in knocking Real Madrid out of the Copa del Rey last night, scoring a brace in Atletico Madrid’s 2-2 draw at the Santiago Bernabeu.

The strikes, which came in the first and 46th minutes, were the Spain international’s first goals since returning to the Vicente Calderon club.

Torres follows in illustrious footsteps in his feat of scoring twice at the Bernabeu against Madrid.

The last player to do the same was four-times Ballon d’Or winner Lionel Messi, who netted a hat-trick against the current European champions last March in a 4-3 victory for Barcelona on enemy soil.

Prior to Messi’s triple, Ivan Rakitic had bagged a brace for former club Sevilla in a 7-3 defeat to Madrid back in October 2013.

Torres took both of his goals with confidence, outstripping Pepe with ease, and will now hope to pin down a regular starting berth in Diego Simeone’s side.

The former Liverpool and Chelsea man has gone through a tough time of it in recent years, with the elation of his Atletico team-mates clear in celebrating Torres’ strikes last night.
