As reported by the Bolton News, Wanderers are looking to sign Commons after allowing Spearing to join Watford for the remainder of the season.
Former Liverpool man Spearing is club captain at the Macron Stadium, but he has become a peripheral figure since Neil Lennon took charge of the club. A favourite of former boss Dougie Freedman, who signed him last year for £1.5 million, Spearing was to be the centre of all Bolton’s future success, but he has been cast out of the first-team since former Celtic boss Lennon took charge.
With Watford looking for a new defensive midfielder following Keith Andrews’ departure from Vicarage Road - having been on loan from the Trotters - Spearing represents a wise signing, and he has all the Championship experience necessary that could see them fight for promotion to the Premier League.
Bolton are looking to remove him from their squad to free up a large portion of his wages, which will then allow them to move for Bhoys star Kris Commons, who has three goals in 13 league appearances this term.
Having scored 27 goals in 34 games last season, former Forest and Derby man Commons was named PFA Scotland and Scottish Football Writer’s Player of the Year, and he could be looking to link up with Lennon, who signed him for the Scottish club in 2011. Having been put off by the financial expense of such a deal for Commons, the report indicates that removing Spearing from the club could make a move for the attacker a viable option.
There is also a suggestion in the report that Manchester United’s Nick Powell is a potential option for Lennon, should a move for Commons not materialise.
