Liverpool outcast Iago Aspas leads Copa del Rey scoring charts

Iago Aspas has now netted seven goals in four games for Sevilla.

The 27-year-old forward signed for the La Liga club over the summer, signing on a season-long loan from Liverpool.

He enjoyed a poor time on Merseyside, having only moved there at the start of the last campaign. Struggling to find a place in the first-team ahead of Daniel Sturridge, Luis Suarez and Raheem Sterling, he failed to score a single league goal as the Reds came so close to winning the title under Brendan Rodgers. He ended up making 15 appearances for the Reds in all competitions, but only scored once, netting in a 2-0 FA Cup victory over Oldham.

With a similar title push expected this year, Aspas was allowed to return to his homeland, with no route back into the Liverpool starting XI expected. However, Suarez left the club to sign for Barcelona, and Daniel Sturridge has been injured since the start of the season - having made just three appearances. Summer arrivals Rickie Lambert and Mario Balotelli have hardly set the world alight with their goalscoring form, and, whilst many were pleased to see Aspas leave Anfield over the summer, his record with Sevilla would be appreciated on Merseyside right now.

Although he has yet to score in La Liga, the 27-year-old has enjoyed an incredible run in the Copa del Rey, helping Los Rojiblancos reach the quarter-finals of Spain’s premier cup competition.

He scored consecutive hat-tricks in an 11-2 aggregate win over Segunda Division side Sabadell in the Round of 32, with his three strikes in the second leg coming in a four-minute spell. He then added another goal to his tally in the Round of 16 second leg victory over fellow La Liga side Granada, scoring one of four goals in a 6-1 aggregate win.

Due to his impressive feats in front of goal, Aspas is now the leading goalscorer in this year’s edition of the Copa del Rey, having scored seven goals in just four games - one of which he didn’t start.

For Liverpool, they will be looking on at Aspas in the knowledge that he has scored more goals than all but one Reds player - Steven Gerrard - in just four games. Gerrard has nine strikes to his name, but in 26 appearances, and he could well be wishing that the Spaniard had remained at Anfield for this season.
