Derby County boss Steve McLaren explains why he snapped up Leeds United veteran Stephen Warnock

Derby have signed the former England international on an 18-month deal.

Derby County have completed the signing of Stephen Warnock today from Leeds United. The former England international has been the club captain at Elland Road since Neil Redfearn became the permanent manager of the club, so his departure will be sorely felt at the Yorkshire club.

After the deal was completed Steve McLaren spoke to the official Derby County website about the move, and explained just why he decided to bring in Warnock from their Championship rivals.

He stated:

“We’re very pleased to welcome Stephen Warnock to Derby County.

“He is a solid and experienced defender who certainly strengthens our defensive options for the remaining months of the season.

“The next few months are going to be extremely important for us and it is vital to have a strong squad to call upon.”

“As well as being a very good player he has excellent leadership qualities.”

It seems as though his arrival is directly linked to their push for promotion. McLaren clearly feels that Derby needed an extra pair of legs in the left-back position. At the moment Derby have the likes of Craig Forsyth and Lee Naylor who can play at left-back, but obviously Steve McLaren felt the opportunity to sign the experienced defender on the cheap was too good an opportunity to reject.

He has signed an 18-month deal at the club with an option for another year. Derby fans will hope the strength in depth he offers as well as his leadership qualities help Derby secure top-flight football.
