Carver gives positive injury update as Abeid and de Jong return to training

Newcastle caretaker manager John Carver says that injured duo Mehdi Abeid and Siem de Jong have returned to training.

Newcastle United have yet to appoint a permanent replacement for Alan Pardew, which leaves caretaker manager John Carver in charge of the Magpies.

In today's press conference, Carver told the media, as reported by the Shields Gazette, that two stars have returned to training today - midfielder Mehdi Abeid and playmaker Siem de Jong.

"Mehdi Abeid and Siem de Jong trained for the first time today. Mehdi is further ahead than Siem," said Carver ahead of this weekend's game against Southampton.

Abeid, 22, has played three Premier League games this season, but impressed in his limited time on the pitch before sustaining a broken toe in December.

Meanwhile, summer signing de Jong has played just 99 minutes of Premier League action since joining from Ajax, and his return will be valuable to the Magpies given that the Dutch international hit 75 goals in the last 5 seasons for Ajax.

However, Carver did also note that former Manchester United winger Gabriel Obertan is still some time away from the first team yet.

"Gabriel Obertan is about two weeks away from joining in with the team. He’s in great condition and has worked really hard," he added.
