Wii games will now be available to download for Wii U

Nintendo Direct Wii games on Wii U screen 1

Nintendo's eShop will offer up Wii games for use on the Nintendo Wii U console.

During today's Nintendo Direct broadcast it was revealed that Nintendo Wii games will become available to buy in digital form on Nintendo's eShop, to be played on Nintendo's Wii U console.

Wii games can be played on the Wii U anyway, if you have the physical disc, but up until now there was no functionality for the games to function if downloaded.

Following the new feature's announcement, Super Mario Galaxy 2 has been made available on the eShop right now.

More Wii games are due to hit eShop in the future, with Punch-Out!! scheduled for 22nd January, and Metroid Prime Trilogy due 29th January. Each of the games will be offered half price in the week following their release.

If a Wii game could use the Classic Controller originally, you will be able to use the Wii U's GamePad to play it too.

Watch the entire Nintendo Direct from today below - the Wii game announcement for Wii U is at the 08:34 mark.
