The former Dutch national coach has had to endure many critics targeting his defence as a weakness of his United side and it looks like he could well look to shake things up both in this transfer window and the next.
This season, the injury prone trio have accumulated just 2,423 minutes of Premier League football – an average of roughly 9 appearances each – and have struggled to reach the top of their game when called upon. Although, as it has been a disjointed season for all three it should come as no surprise.
As for Rafael, the Brazilian right-back has often been labelled as a wide midfielder playing out of position due to his defensive limitations but it seems like the joke is lost on Van Gaal who is, according to the report, actively seeking a replacement.
In the six games the Rio de Janeiro-born defender has started in the Premier League, United have gone on to concede 10 goals – a tally that is obviously inexcusable for a side with title ambitions.
Although, with 18 days left of the transfer window, Louis van Gaal will have to make his move fairly quickly if he is to find replacements for his reported concerns.
