According to Spanish newspaper AS, Derby County finally reached an agreement with the Professional Football League on what steps to take in order for the best method to pay Albentosa’s release clause of €600,000.
Talking on Monday night, Spanish journalist Balague revealed to Sky Sports that the East Midland’s side had in fact beaten off competition from a significant amount of sides to land the highly-rated defender.
‘’Steve McClaren convinced Gaizka [Mendieta] to leave Lazio to go to Middlesbrough,’’ said Balague. ‘’And now his just done the same for him [Albentosa] to leave Eibar.
‘’He had about 12 offers but out of all of them, McClaren convinced him to go Derby’’
The Rams haven’t seemed to struggle with beating other clubs to players as of late and in an interview two months ago, head of football operations Chris Evans, told the Derbyshire Telegraph how he beat Celtic and eight La Liga clubs to land highly-rated Spanish midfielder Ivan Calero.
As said by Mendieta on Revista de la Liga, Steve McClaren obviously has little problem with attracting such high profile players to the club due to his coaching ability and reputation.
The excitement from Rams fans over the potential signing has almost matched that of George Thorne in the summer, largely due to the outstanding reviews he is coming over from Spain with.
If the former Murcia player does sign this week, he could get the chance to showcase his abilities live on Sky when Derby meet local rivals Nottingham Forest in the 12:15 kick-off at the iPro Stadium.
