Arsenal have allegedly been watching Espanyol defender Hector Moreno - amid reported interest from Tottenham.

According to the Daily Mail, Arsenal have been watching Espanyol centre back Hector Moreno - an alleged target for North London rivals Tottenham.

Moreno, 26, was one of the stars of the World Cup in 2014, turning in a number of impressive displays for Mexico on their way to the last 16, but suffered a broken tibia against the Netherlands, ruling him out for six months.

Now back in action in Spain, Moreno is becoming hot property in this month's transfer window, with Tottenham already credited with an interest in him.

Moreno was signed by Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino at Espanyol, and he became a key part of his defence during their time together in La Liga.

It's therefore little surprise that, with Spurs needing defenders and Espanyol needing money according to SPORT, Moreno has been strongly linked with a move to White Hart Lane during the last month.

Yet now, the red half of North London could enter the race, with the Daily Mail suggesting that ex-Leeds boss and current Arsenal scout Brian McDermott over to Spain in order to watch Moreno.

The Gunners also need defensive reinforcements, with little depth behind Laurent Koscielny and Per Mertesacker since the sale of Thomas Vermaelen to Barcelona last summer.

Moreno could now be on Wenger's radar if the reports are to be believed, and it would be interesting to see who the Mexican would choose if both clubs made bids for his services.
