Long-running Nintendo Easter egg found in Mario Kart 8

‘Totaka’s Song’ melody hummed by spectating Yoshis.

Nintendo composer and sound designer Kazumi Totaka’s signature musical Easter egg known as Totaka’s Song has been spotted in Mario Kart 8.

For those unfamiliar with Totaka’s Song it is a recurring 19-note tune that has been hidden away (often in rarer musical moments) in various Nintendo titles Totaka has worked on over the years including The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening, Wii Sports, Super Smash Bros Brawl and numerous Animal Crossing titles.

As discovered by Somewhat Awesome Games, Totaka’s memorable melody is also to be found in Mario Kart 8. To hear it yourself you’ll need to find tracks with spectating Yoshi’s (such as Yoshi Valley, Sweet Sweet Canyon etc) and sometimes they’ll be humming the tune merrilly. It’s advisable to have the main music turned down in order to pick out the secret song. Check out the video below to learn more.

Whilst Totaka himself hasn’t contributed to the music or sounds design for Mario kart 8 he has performed his other long-standing duty of providing the voice of Yoshi (something he’s been doing since 1997), so it’s apt that Yoshis in Mario Kart 8 should be singing his tune rather than it being hidden away in another song he has written.
