Liverpool legend Steve Nicol has told ESPN FC that Lyon striker Alexandre Lacazette is the man who could answer his former club’s problems up top.
Lacazette, 23, has been in sensational form for the French club this season, netting 19 goals in 20 Ligue 1 games to help fire his team to the top of the table.
His performances have not gone unnoticed across Europe, with both Liverpool and Arsenal mentioned as potential suitors in recent months, as Red manager Brendan Rodgers looks to bolster his attack for the second half of the season.
While it has been suggested that the club could look to spend an extra £3 million to bring fellow France-based forward Divock Origi to Anfield earlier than his scheduled summer arrival, Nicol thinks it would be much wise to make a run at Lacazette, who he even believes is comparable to Luis Suarez at the same age.
“I think Liverpool have an opportunity to sign this guy and they should,” he said. “He’s a young player in the mould that they’re probably looking for.
He’s got 19 goals in 20 league games, which is just tremendous, and he actually reminds me a little bit of Suarez when he was back at Ajax in Holland.
“The guy loves to go forward and get goals, and I think he would form a great pairing with Daniel Sturridge.”
Nevertheless, Lyon president Jean-Michel Aulas does not appear keen to give up his star man this month, telling French paper Le Parisien earlier in the week that a deal won’t be happening.
“You can’t put a figure on it,” he said. “What’s the name of the Welshman at Real Madrid? I think Alexandre is a lot better. But Alexandre doesn’t have a price, so it’s pointless thinking of one.
"We have resolved the problem by signing a contract through to 2018," he continued. "I find him transformed. He has grown. He's an intelligent boy -- he knows the team and the coach allow him to express himself and enable him to become one of Europe's best marksmen."
Regardless, with Daniel Sturridge’s fitness an ongoing issue, and Rickie Lambert, Fabio Borini and Mario Balotelli combining for just one league goal between them, it’s clear that Liverpool need to add another striker to their ranks in the coming weeks.
However, in the case of Lacazette, it appears as though it would take an enormous offer to make something happen.
