It was night of heartbreak for Joel Robles the Everton goalkeeper at the Boleyn Ground last night but there may be some positives to come out of his display.
Robles pulled off a string of fine saves to keep the Toffees in the third round tie which saw Everton take the tie into extra-time but couldn't hold on after Romelu Lukaku gave them the lead despite being down to 10 men.
It came to the lottery of penalties, and down to the goalkeepers when Robles had to step up to take a spot-kick. His intention seemed clear as he aimed to hit as hard as he could towards the goal, but his penalty cannoned off the cross bar.
His opposite number Adrian managed to convert his spot-kick as he took his gloves off in the run-up to his penalty, and send West Ham United through to the fourth round.
Robles has recently been filling in for Tim Howard in the Everton goal because of the American's calf injury, which has led to speculation over the side bringing in a new goalkeeper. Here is what a few fans had to say on twitter about the Robles's performance:
Wondering if any Evertonians still harbouring doubts over Robles. Not me. Not now. He was brilliant. End of. #EFC— Alan Kirwin (@alankirwin) January 13, 2015
Robles now having a run of games and growing in confidence. Good to see— EFC People's Group (@ThePeoplesGroup) January 13, 2015
Robles - great last night. Just shows keepers need games under their belts to gain much needed confidence.— Simon Magner (@Simon_Mag) January 14, 2015
All the Robles fans should be clear that we would still be in the cup if Howard was in goal for the pens.— Sid (@sidneykidney4) January 14, 2015
