Done deal: Tottenham miss out on Argentine as Roma swoop for Ponce

Tottenham Hotspur have missed out on Ezequiel Ponce to Roma.

Roma have sealed the signing of Ezequiel Ponce, confirmed both Argentine side Newells Old Boys and

Ponce had been linked with a switch to Tottenham Hotspur, after the Newells club president confirmed an offer from the Premier League side, reported Eurosport.

The Argentine is highly rated in his homeland, already appearing in the top flight at 17-years-old.

Newells announcement confirmed that Ponce will remain on loan with them until December.

Such an agreement is likely to have swayed the thinking of the Argentine club, able to keep hold of their young talent throughout 2015.

Tottenham's potential trump card in the Ponce deal could have been head coach Mauricio Pochettino, who played for Newells at the start of his career.

The deal continues Roma's mission to snap up young strikers from South America, acquiring three top teenage talents over the past year.

12 months ago they lured Antonio Sanabria away from Barcelona, and earlier this transfer window they signed Uruguayan prospect Kevin Mendez.
