Tottenham Hotspur have a lot of right-backs, but one that may have slipped under the radar of neutrals is 22-year-old Ryan Fredericks, who is currently on loan at Championship side Middlesbrough.
Fredericks is highly regarded at White Hart Lane, but following the arrival of DeAndre Yedlin – who ended his loan spell at Seattle Sounders to finally join up with his parent club this month having agreed a reported £2.5million move last summer – one wonders what the future holds for the young loanee.
After all, Tottenham also have Kyle Walker, Eric Dier, Vlad Chiriches and Kyle Naughton who can all play on the right side of defence, and while the latter two may well move on in due course, that still leaves a lot of competition for Fredericks to get the better of.
Of course it must be noted that Fredericks can also play as a right-sided midfielder, but then so can Yedlin, Aaron Lennon, Andros Townsend and Erik Lamela.
Tottenham have shown they are not afraid to give young players a chance, and have benefited as a result with the performances of Harry Kane, Ryan Mason and Nabil Bentaleb this season. But Yedlin’s arrival and Walker’s recovery means Fredericks has a very interesting few years ahead of him.
There is no doubt he has the talent to succeed at Tottenham, but will he get the chances?
