Out of the five current Premier League players to receive nominations for the Ballon d’Or Manchester United’s Angel di Maria stormed to victory with 13 more votes than his closest rival Diego Costa, according to official FIFA documents.
Although it wasn’t a memorable night in the Ballon d’Or for Premier League players, especially those who were plying their trade in England last season, the United playmaker was named by 31 people, accumulating in 63 votes.
The Chelsea striker came second, with 50 votes from 24 people. While Yaya Toure, who was playing Premier League football last season, finished third with 42 votes from the same number of people - 24.
As for the rest of Europe, there was little surprise as La Liga players dominated the nominations and very few contested opinions over the eventual winner, Cristiano Ronaldo.
Barcelona forward Lionel Messi ended up in second place, edging out World Cup and Bundesliga winner Manuel Neuer.
