Newcastle United star Jack Colback has told the Chronicle that Tim Krul’s return to the team for the match against Chelsea was important for the Dutchman.
Krul featured for the first time in two months against the Blues and Colback believes the experience he injects into the team can make a difference.
“It was good for Tim. Jak (Alnwick) has came in and it has been difficult for him with all the games he had to play,” Colback told the Chronicle.
“It’s vital to have experience in goal and Tim brings a lot of that.”
Alnwick found himself thrust into the spotlight and he made a couple of errors during the Christmas and New Year period, which led to criticism and calls for fans to stand by him.
Alnwick is one of the most talented goalkeepers in the Premier League, but his confidence will be rocked and Krul can help in terms of keeping him motivated and on his toes.
His run in the side will do him some good but it’s important for Newcastle to have leadership type figures in their team as they continue their search for a new manager.
Krul can also offer something in terms of how he organises his back four and keeps the defence alert to the threats coming from the opposition.
Newcastle have conceded six goals in their last three Premier League games and Krul can provide some authority in behind the back four.
Newcastle are one point away from dropping into the bottom half of the table and it’s important they focus on getting wins in the games against Southampton and Hull City, which Krul looks set to start in.
Two wins will push the side further up the table and leave any new boss coming on with a much more favourable situation.
