Former Tottenham Hotspur forward Garth Crooks has been singing the praises of Southampton defender Jose Fonte on BBC Sport.
Portugal international centre-back Fonte has been in impressive form for the Saints so far this season and has been a key player in their successful campaign.
The 31-year-old was a rock at the back on Sunday when Southampton took on Manchester United at Old Trafford in the Premier League.
Fonte was important in the 1-0 win, as he ended up with stats of eight clearances, three interceptions, 50% aerial duels, 88% pass accuracy and one shot.
Crooks included the former Crystal Palace star in his Team of the Week for BBC Sport and wrote: “This player has been quietly getting on with his job at Southampton this season and his effectiveness at the back for the Saints cannot be underestimated.
“Against Manchester United he was the coolest man on the pitch and totally unfazed by Robin van Persie and Angel Di Maria.
"He spent the afternoon organising a superb defensive display, resulting in a well-earned victory. A player who plays with his head and not just his heart. A very intelligent defender.”
Fonte has indeed been one of the best players for Southampton, creating four chances, winning 52% of the duels, having a pass accuracy of 86% and a shot accuracy of 60% in 20 Premier League appearances.
Southampton are currently third in the Premier League table with 39 points from 21 matches, two points above fourth-placed Manchester United.
Ronald Koeman’s side are very much in the running for a top-four place, and one should not be surprised if they even finish third.
