Arsenal star Santi Cazorla has told the club’s official website that his new role in the centre of midfield has allowed him to rediscover his best form.
Manager Arsene Wenger has been using Cazorla in the middle of the park in recent weeks and the switch has so far proved a considerable success, with the Spain international producing some of his finest performances of the season over the festive period.
Recording four goals and two assists over the past seven league games, the former Malaga man has looked like the Gunners’ top creative outlet behind Alexis Sanchez, and he believes that he has now found his best role in the side.
“I always try to make goals,” he told Arsenal Player. “It’s important for me because I am a midfielder and I always want to help the team score, and I will try to make more before the end of the season.
“I have more space [in the middle], more possibilities to score and assist, and I like this position very much. I always can help the team and I love when I play in the middle.”
With Mesut Ozil returning to action at the weekend after 12 weeks out with knee ligament damage, it remains to be seen how Wenger will look to adapt his line-up but, given Cazorla’s recent showings, the Frenchman no doubt needs to keep his in-form midfielder where he is.
The diminutive Spaniard’s name often came up in transfer rumours over the summer, with a switch to La Liga champions Atletico Madrid mooted, but holding onto him is so far proving to be an excellent decision.
