The Guardian has reported that Liverpool are ready to start talks with central defender Martin Skrtel over extending his contract.
His current deal expires in a year-and-a-half, which gives Liverpool time to talk through new terms and to find a replacement if no agreement can be reached.
We’ve considered three key questions the Guardian’s report prompts as well as some initial reaction from Liverpool fans.
Does he deserve it?
He’s certainly fought hard for his place in the team under Brendan Rodgers and he is an important component of the back four. He’s made 18 appearances so far this season, which shows the faith the boss has in him despite some inconsistency at times.
What about Lovren and Sakho?
Dejan Lovren arrived in a big money deal from Southampton last summer and finds himself out of the side after a difficult start to his Anfield career. Sakho has played more of a role in recent times and seems to have settled following his move from PSG.
It seems likely that the pair will rotate next to Skrtel if Liverpool give him a new deal.
Will it affect Rodgers’ transfer plans?
The defence is an area that Liverpool seem to have well covered with players arguably needed in other positions e.g. a replacement for Steven Gerrard and another centre forward up front.
Here is what some Liverpool fans on Twitter have had to say about the possibility of a new deal for Skrtel.
On way to airport: Iceland, Northern Lights. If my plane crashes please read out on the news that I don't want Skrtel to get a new contract.— BP-15 (@BreakfastPercy) January 13, 2015

If we sign Fabian Delph and give Skrtel a new contract then I'm convinced our club is being run by a group of Chelsea double agents.— David (@QuilloGram) January 12, 2015
