With Aston Villa desperate for a creative spark, it’s no surprise that fans flooded to Twitter on Tuesday afternoon to react to the signing of Spanish playmaker Carles Gil.
Gil, 22, arrives from hometown club Valencia on a deal until 2019, with reports stating that the fee is in the region of £3.25 million.
The attacking midfielder had struggled to break into the line-up at the Mestalla over the first half of the season, making just two starts in eight La Liga appearances, but did impress while on loan at top-flight rivals Elche during the previous two campaigns.
It was there he lined up alongside Villa summer signing Carlos Sanchez, and the former Spain Under-21 international is now hoping to take to the challenge of the Premier League in a similar vain to the Colombian.
"Once I knew that this club was interested in me I wanted to join, he told the club’s official website. “I am really looking forward to playing here and showing the fans what I can do.
"I can play on either side or in the middle of midfield and I like playing as part of the team, making things happen for my teammates.
"This is a very historic club in England, a very important club in the Premier League, and I am looking forward to playing for such a great club in a league that is the top league in the world."
Gil’s name might not be known to most English football fans but, with Villa netting just 11 goals in 21 league games so far this season, the claret and blue faithful are hoping that his introduction can help turn around Paul Lambert’s struggling side.

On a more serious note, good luck. And ignore anyone who says "give it to Gabby" #WelcomeCarles— Alex Bullivant (@Bully_eleven) January 13, 2015

It's a shame that Lambert will take that much flair and creativity from Gil that plumber dave will look more creative than him #avfc— Lewis Dickens (@DickensLewis) January 13, 2015
