Arsenal’s reported interest in Mattia Perin makes no sense after David Ospina signing

Goalkeeping Gloves

Arsenal have been linked with yet another goalkeeper but they should instead show faith in a recent signing.

Arsenal could do with strengthening in a few positions, but goalkeeper is not one of them.

According to a report in the Mirror on Tuesday, the Gunners have turned their attention to Genoa stopper Mattia Perin after allegedly missing out on Loris Karius.

But there is a very big reason why Arsenal do not need a new goalkeeper, even if Wojciech Szczesny’s place on the bench last weekend is a sign of things to come.

In David Ospina, Arsenal have a goalkeeper who has experience, talent and plenty of time on his side.

The 26-year-old arrived at the Emirates Stadium in the summer but he had to be patient after the presence of Szczesny and a spell out injured meant his Premier League debut did not come until last weekend.

A clean-sheet in a 3-0 win against Stoke City was a promising start, and considering his outstanding form for Colombia and the fact that he is, well, simply very good, why would Arsenal want yet another ‘keeper on their books?

Perin is a promising young player and a big move is surely on the horizon for him, but Arsenal do not need him.

They need a new centre-back to act as back-up for Laurent Koscielny and Per Mertesacker and a world-class defensive midfielder.

That is where they should be focusing, with Ospina and Szczesny’s presence meaning the latest Perin rumours should be taken with a sizeable punch of salt.
