Having reportedly been on a scouting mission to Portugal, we consider three Benfica players Tottenham Hotspur may be monitoring.
According to Portuguese newspaper A Bola's print version Tottenham Hotspur sent scouts to watch Benfica’s recent match against Vitoria Guimaraes.
A copy of the report was later published online by Sport Witness, so who could the North London club have their eye on?
There is no doubt they need to strengthen in some key areas, not least up front, while Mauricio Pochettino could seek to bring new wide players to White Hart Lane this month.
With that in mind, we take a look at three Benfica players Tottenham may have been watching particularly closely.
Nicolas Gaitan is a 26-year-old who is no stranger to the gossip columns. The fact that he is a winger means he could well have been interesting Tottenham, especially when you consider his eye for an assist – 11 this season and counting.
Gaitan has 60 assists in total for the Portuguese side and with Tottenham’s struggles in front of goal at times this season, the creative Argentine would be a savvy addition.
Another winger who could be a smart investment for Tottenham if they took the risk is Ola John.
The 22-year-old is predominantly a left-winger although he can occupy the opposite flank or play as an attacking midfielder if required.
In his 68 matches for the current Primeira Liga champions he has scored seven goals and set up a further 10, so he is very much a work-in-progress.
Tottenham have some wonderful young talent at their disposal but nothing quite like Brazilian sensation Anderson Talisca.
The 20-year-old is a forward who could form an interesting partnership with Harry Kane if given the chance, but his outstanding start to life at Benfica means the great and the good of the game could be looking at him.
Talisca has scored nine goals in 16 league games this season and 10 in all competitions, and if Tottenham are keeping tabs on Benfica’s best talent the youngster is near the top of that particular pile.
