Newcastle United legend Alan Shearer has written in The Sun that Aston Villa could suffer relegation from the Premier League at the end of the season.
The Villans are having a torrid campaign and currently find themselves 13th in the league table with 22 points from 21 matches.
Villa are just three points above the relegation zone and have made a mixed start to the New Year.
Shearer, a former Newcastle striker, believes that Paul Lambert’s side could go down to the Championship at the end of the season.
“Crystal Palace and West Brom have both sacked the managers they started the season with, while at Aston Villa the atmosphere is toxic,” the 44-year-old wrote in The Sun. “There is every chance Villa could go down the way things are there.”
Shearer made the comments while praising Burnley for their fighting spirit and the way they are starting to turn their season around.
Villa are indeed very much in the relegation fight, and manager Lambert has come under pressure. Attendance is falling, and the fans are turning on the team.
The current Villa team do have some good players who should not be fighting against relegation. However, they are underperforming and do not seem to able to show signs that they will step up their game anytime soon.
