The German partnered captain Ryan Shawcross in the centre of defence against the Gunners having only sealed his loan move from Bayer Levekusen last week.
Being thrust into the limelight so quickly didn’t seem to bother the defender though, and Hughes described his performance as one of the only positives from the eventual 3-0 loss.
"We didn't have too many positives from the game at the Emirates but those two were a couple we can look back on and think there's something there.”
It proved to be a disappointing day in London for Hughes' side, as a Laurent Koscielny header and two goals from Alexis Sanchez saw the home team run out comfortable winners at the Emirates.
The positive start from Wollscheid will boost Hughes’ spirits though, and he feels that the defender will get even better when he develops a more solid understanding of the Premier League through extended game time.
"We certainly feel Philipp is a good player. He's got a good range of passing and the more games he plays will help him develop a better understanding, but for a start I thought he did fine,” said Hughes.
