Manchester United striker Robin van Persie has taken to Twitter the day after suffering an ankle injury during the club's 1-0 defeat to Southampton.
The Dutch striker started the match but was unable to help his side avoid defeat, with United failing to have a shot on target for the first time at Old Trafford since 2009.
He was substituted in the 61st minute, replaced by midfielder Ander Herrera, and he has since confirmed on social media that he has been advised not to fly to the Ballon d'Or ceremony, where he is nominated for the outstanding header he scored for the Netherlands against Spain at last summer's World Cup.
Writing on his official Twitter account, the United forward said, "On advice of the club medical staff I am unable to fly out to Zurich tomorrow to attend the FIFA Ballon d'Or gala.
It will no doubt come as a big blow for the player who could win the Puskas Award, which goes to the best goal of the year.
But United manager Louis van Gaal will want to ensure his striker is back to full fitness as soon as possible, with his side faltering in the league after a fine recent spell.
