Leeds Sam Byram compared to Gareth Bale in terms of positional development by Neil Redfearn

Neil Redfearn wants Sam Byram to embrace the chance to develop in midfield in the immediate future - like former Tottenham Hotspur star Gareth Bale.

Leeds United have a multitude of players at their disposal, and Neil Redfearn is still experimenting.

One of the most useful playes is Gaetano Berardi, capable of playing in either full-back position.

Head coach Redfearn decided to play him at right-back this weekend, allowing Sam Byram to move into midfield in the 1-1-1 draw.

Redfearn told BBC Radio Leeds: "There's more to Sam. Playing in front of Berardi he gives us a different dimension. He's got great pace, he's athletic, he goes past people.

"I think it's opened his eyes today as to what he's capable of. I mentioned to him, look at Gareth Bale, he started at left-back, now he's a left winger.

"There's no reason why he can't go on and play in a different position and be more effective further forward and I think he did that today."

Byram is only 21-years-old and has time to learn about his attributes and flourish creatively. He has a boss in Neil Redfearn who managed him in the academy and is surely the very best person to help him learn about which position will see him enjoy the greatest success in his career.

There is a team benefit to Byram's position switch, with Leeds badly lacking width in previous matches, because they have lacked midfielders capable of playing out wide.

Having a full-back as solid as Berardi gives Redfearn the confidence to let Byram solve this conundrum, especially useful with the present transfer embargo.

Gareth Bale began his career as Redfearn pointed out, as a full-back, before enjoying more success in midfield in his early 20s. He is presently the world's most expensive player after moving from Tottenham to Real Madrid for £85 million in 2013.

Leeds fans would be quite happy however if Byram doesn't fetch a single fee in his entire career.
