After four weeks of the current Ligue 1 season, Olympique Lyonnais were 17th and things looked far from promising. The form of Alexandre Lacazette, who is linked to Arsenal and Liverpool by sources including ESPN, has guided the former French giants to the top of the league for the first time in two years.
Against Toulouse on Sunday, Lyon knew that a win at the Stade Gerland would fire them above Marseille, putting them in top spot.
Lyon started quickly and looked in the mood from the first whistle. Le Téféce would have known all about the threat of Lacazette, but there was nothing they could do to stop him.
After 14 minutes Lyon made the breakthrough. Nabil Fekir slipped the ball out to the striker on the right of the penalty box and the France international smashed his shot past Ali Ahamada at his near post.
It was soon 2-0 to the home side, and it was that man Lacazette once again. Christophe Jallet broke forward from right-back and slipped the ball to Corentin Tolisso. The young midfielder made it to the edge of the box before his pass was deflected into the path of Ligue 1’s top scorer.
There was only one outcome, the striker sweeping home his 19th goal of the season after 27 minutes. It was all but game over in the second half when Nabil Fekir scored his eighth of the season.
The third goal put the game beyond doubt, and Lyon deservedly sit on top of the league after 20 games. The brace from Lacazette was his fourth double in a row and the perfect start to 2015.
All the signs are there that Lacazette will stay with Lyon for the rest of the season. No matter what value Les Gones have put on their striker, there is nothing that can compensate for having a chance of winning the Ligue 1 title for the first time since their glory period at the turn of the Millennium.
