Van Gaal speaks about Falcao’s absence from United squad

Manchester United's manager has been speaking about their loan star.

Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal has been speaking about why Radamel Falcao did not make his match-day squad for the game against Southampton.

The Colombian international has featured in United's last six matches in all competitions, starting five of them, but he was nowhere to be seen when the line-ups were announced this weekend.

Falcao had to contend with injury and fitness issues in his early months at Old Trafford but it now appears those problems are behind him, meaning the fact he did not even make the bench against Southampton was a big shock.

However, in comments published by ESPN, van Gaal moved to quash any concerns regarding the player’s fitness.

“Falcao isn’t injured, just not selected in the squad,” the United boss is quoted as saying.

“It’s much more difficult (selecting a side) but that’s the task of the manager and I have a staff who advise me as well.”

So if Falcao is not injured, then he has simply not been chosen, with young forward James Wilson the back-up striker despite Falcao’s return to goal-scoring form in recent weeks.

It remains to be seen if United will opt to turn Falcao’s loan spell into a permanent move, but the more often he is left out, the less likely that appears.
