Southampton boss Ronald Koeman always needed to strengthen his squad, and with Sadio Mane scheduled to head out to the Africa Cup of Nations, he had to bring in a winger.
The Dutchman made the decision to sign Werder Bremen's Eljero Elia on loan until the end of the season, with the former Netherlands international no doubt familiar to compatriot Koeman.
With Mane missing against United, Koeman decided to drop Dusan Tadic and play Elia instead in a bid to have some pace around striker Graziano Pelle.
Elia played out on the left hand side and had some bright moments, turning Phil Jones inside out on a couple of occasions for the Saints.
He played just 63 minutes before making way for Tadic, who did score the winning goal for Southampton, but fans were still suitably impressed with Elia's debut.
Some fans compared him to the aforementioned Mane, whilst others said he looks like another fine piece of business from Koeman, who has already added the likes of Ryan Bertrand, Toby Alderweireld and Pelle, giving him a fine record in the transfer market.
Here is how Southampton fans reacted on Twitter to Elia's debut...
Was very impressed with Elia today too, very nifty with his footwork #saintsfc— Kirstie (@Kirstie_SFC) January 11, 2015

Elia could well up similar to Mane. Frustrating at times, but provides an X factor the team so badly needs #saintsfc— Russell Carey (@Fuffell) January 11, 2015
Decent debut by Elia, looks a promising player.— Adam Priestley (@aapriestley) January 11, 2015
