We assess the performances of Manchester United's players against Southampton today.
David De Gea 6 - not a great deal he could do with the goal, and would have expected better protection from his defence.
Phil Jones 5 - caught out of position a few times and was shaky in possession when asked to bring the ball out from the back.
Chris Smalling 5 - much the same as Jones in terms of struggling when bringing the ball out from the back, and could have done better with Southampton's goal.
Daley Blind 7 - one of the few United players to come out with some credit, Blind used the ball well upon his return to the team and continues to be a versatile player for van Gaal.
Antonio Valencia 6 - had a couple of decent surges forward but his end product continues to frustrate, failing to provide quality for Robin van Persie.
Luke Shaw 5 - struggled against his former club. Was substituted for Tyler Blackett in the second half, and with Louis van Gaal admitting that there was no injury, it summed up a poor outing for the £27m summer signing.
Michael Carrick 6 - wasn't allowed the time to dictate the game but did a good job of covering for Jones and Smalling in defence.
Juan Mata 6 - had a number of chances in the second half but missed them all. Yet, in a game where United had little spark, at least he was looking threatening.
Wayne Rooney 5 - Just didn't have any effect on the game at all, and gave the ball away far too much. Should be played further forward.
Angel Di Maria 5 - was played further forward as Louis van Gaal seemingly tried to recreate Arjen Robben's role for his Netherlands side at the 2014 World Cup, but offered very little upon his return from injury.
Robin van Persie 5 - another poor showing van Persie. Unless he's scoring goals, he adds nothing to the United team - and when the goals don't flow, van Persie is of very little use.
Ander Herrera 6 - really should have started the game in midfield, and played fairly well when he came on, added some energy and creativity.
Tyler Blackett 5 - didn't really have a great deal to do in defence as United pushed forward.
Marouane Fellaini 6 - offered a more direct option in attack, and had some promising moments but failed to really get United going in attack.
