Manchester United had the chance to close the gap on rivals Manchester City in second place after their draw with Everton on Saturday - but blew their opportunity against Southampton.
The Saints continued their superb season so far by beating United at Old Trafford, as Dusan Tadic's goal with just 20 minutes to play saw Ronald Koeman's men leave with all three points.
It was a frustrating afternoon for United, who just couldn't seem to find any fluidity to their attacks at all, with Juan Mata, Wayne Rooney and Robin van Persie all struggling.
Midfielder Angel Di Maria came in for the most criticism though, with the Argentine again struggling to make much of an impact.
Manager Louis van Gaal played Di Maria as something of auxiliary striker, in what seemed to be a bid to recreate Arjen Robben's role for his Netherlands side at the 2014 World Cup.
That didn't work though, with Di Maria rarely threatening the Southampton defence, as United couldn't even muster one shot on target.
Fans were disappointed with Di Maria's contribution, but they were also highly critical of van Gaal - even if one fans says that he'd rather United spent the £60m Di Maria fee on Chelsea's Diego Costa and Arsenal's Alexis Sanchez.
Completely didn't utilise Di Maria today he needs to play where he picks the ball up in a deeper position. Not with his back to goal #mufc— Chesney (@dewii10) January 11, 2015
Di maria was so poor today lets be honest top 4 finish will be so difficult as hell #MUFC— Best (@Unitd4all) January 11, 2015
Another frustrating match. We need to stick Di Maria out wide instead of up front. He's not a striker! #mufc— OLLYBELLEZA (@ollybelleza) January 11, 2015
DiMaria is best when he can play off team mates. Case and point, his chip goal v Leicester playing off Rooney #MUFC— Africa Ukoh (@Pensage) January 11, 2015
Di Maria was shocking today! Didn't look interested at times #mufc— Danny Beorby (@Dannyb444) January 11, 2015
Di María needs to play deeper facing the goal. He is wasted playing up top with his back to goal. Not the same player #MUFC— Wayne DiMaria (@salmantajbhai) January 11, 2015
