Kyle Walker’s advice to Tottenham Hotspur teammate Harry Kane

Kyle Walker urges Tottenham Hotspur teammate Harry Kane not to get carried away and to play in the European Under-21 Championship finals in the summer.

Tottenham Hotspur defender Kyle Walker has advised teammate Harry Kane not to get carried away with his recent success.

England Under-21 international Kane has been hitting the headlines over the past several weeks for his truly brilliant performances.

The 21-year-old has established himself as a key player in the Tottenham team and is now the first-choice striker.

There have been calls for Kane to be drafted into the England senior team, with many suggesting that he could go on to become one of the best players for the Three Lions.

Walker has full confidence in his teammate’s ability, but he has urged his compatriot to keep his feet on the ground.

The 24-year-old believes that Kane should be part of the England team for the European Under-21 Championship finals in the Czech Republic this summer, highlighting how he himself benefited from a similar experience.

“It could be vital for his development, not just in this country,” Walker told The Sun. “I had a good game against Spain in the tournament in Denmark in 2011 and received a lot of praise from their media.

“They started calling me ‘the new Roberto Carlos’ and it was very flattering. It got me noticed at international level and proved the tournament can benefit your career.”

“It is still early days,” added Walker. “Your first season is often that good one. I had it in my first season when I burst on to the scene and won Young Footballer of the Year.

“Getting into the team is sometimes the easier part. The harder part is staying there and keeping on playing to the high standards you have set. But if he can do that it will be good for our team and good for England, too.”

Walker’s progress at Tottenham has been impeded by a long-term injury, but he is rated as one of the best English full-backs.

Kane would do well to listen to the advice of his teammate who has been there and done that. The youngster is enjoying a breakthrough season, but pressure and expectations will increase in the coming years.
