Arsenal had the chance to leapfrog rivals Tottenham after they lost to Crystal Palace on Saturday evening, and were faced with a game against Stoke City at the Emirates Stadium.
Today was a different story though, with Arsenal comfortable sweeping aside Stoke in a convincing display in North London.
Inside five minutes, Arsenal got their noses in front, as centre back Laurent Koscielny headed home Alexis Sanchez's cross from close range.
Sanchez was superb throughout, and made it 2-0 on 33 minutes after robbing the ball from Steven N'Zonzi before driving into the box and beating Asmir Begovic at his near post.
Stoke never truly threatened David Ospina in the Arsenal goal, and were 3-0 down just four minutes after half time - in bizarre fashion.
Sanchez's free kick was pushed onto the post by Begovic, but the ball cannoned back onto Begovic's hands and over the line to wrap the game up.
The return of Mesut Ozil was a boost to the Gunners, who move up into fifth place, level on points with Southampton before the Saints kicked off against Manchester United this afternoon.
