Lyon fans must hate the January transfer window, not one has passed for the last decade without one of their star players linked with a move away from Les Gones. This year will be no different, with Alexandre Lacazette linked with both Manchester City and Arsenal.
However, going into Sunday’s game, you will forgive the home crowd for being in a jovial mood. The second half of the Ligue 1 season started with Lyon in second place, one point behind Marseille and a point ahead of Paris Saint-Germain, but now with results going their way, they have a chance to end Week 20 on top of the league.
Playing at home against Toulouse on Sunday, Coach Hubert Fournier will look towards his top scorer, Lacazette, to make sure his team don’t slip up like the others.
With 17 goals in 19 games, it is easy to see why the top clubs are drooling over the 23-year-old striker, but the club, his agent and the player himself have repeatedly stated he’s not going anywhere this season.
On Sunday, Lyon will be without five players on international duty and another three through injury, but it says a lot about the strength of their squad that the starting XI still has class all over the pitch.
Lacazette will be partnered by the excellent Nabil Fekir; the 21-year-old has seven goals and four assists, and has become an integral part of this attacking Lyon side.
Lyon have won four games in a row, and with Lacazette in attack, they will be confident of taking on Toulouse and their three-man defence. It will be a huge test for Le Téfécé’s backline, to keep up with the movement of Lyon’s attacking trio.
This season, Toulouse has not had the best of defensive records, and when the purple wall can’t contain their opposition, they don’t have the scoring record to cause their opponents a great deal of problems.
If they can limit Lacazette, they have a chance, but it will only give one of their other options space and time to cause them problems.
Everything points towards a home win, but following the failure of both PSG and Marseille to do the same, anything can happen in this league.
