Manchester United midfielder Ander Herrera has given new signing Victor Valdes a warm welcome by posting a photo of the duo on Facebook for the on-looking fans.
The 32-year-old shot-stopper decided to leave his boyhood club Barcelona in the summer following the expiration of his contract at the Nou Camp.
Initial plans suggested that Valdes was keen on moving to AS Monaco, yet a serious injury sustained towards the end of last season promoted the French club to pull out of a deal.
As a result, the Spanish international – previously a free agent - began to train with the Red Devils in a bid to improve his fitness and seek a club in the January transfer window.
With current club number one David de Gea performing so well, not many anticipated boss Louis van Gaal extending his stay at the club but interest elsewhere, reportedly Liverpool, may have twisted his arm.
On Thursday, Valdes and the club put pen-to-paper on an 18-month contract – a decision which has gone down well with his new teammates.
Valdes joins a growing Spanish contingent at the club in David de Gea, Juan Mata and Ander Herrera, with the latter celebrating his official signing on social networking site Facebook.
“Welcome Victor Valdes,” he wrote while publishing a photo of the duo.
It remains to be seen how involved Valdes becomes in first-team affairs this season, though many might expect him to make his official debut in the FA Cup clash with Cambridge United later this month.
With clubs such as Madrid and Chelsea now persisting with two top goalkeepers and altering depending on the competition, one could expect Valdes to become United’s new cup custodian as of next season.
