McClaren hints left back is next on the cards for Derby County

Steve McClaren has admitted that he is looking at investing in positions where certain players are being overused

Derby County head coach Steve McClaren hinted the Rams will be in for a left back this transfer window after commenting about ensuring certain players are not being over-played.

The Rams have moved quickly in the transfer window this January and have already secured three new players, with Spanish centre back Raul Albentosa reportedly close to making it four. However, according to the former Eredivisie winner, the East Midland's side won't stop there.

Talking to the Derbyshire Telegraph, when asked about further signings, the former England boss said: "We are looking at one or two possibilities

"We have got one or two positions in which we are over-playing players at the present moment, and we are looking in those areas."

Although it could be speculated to be a number of positions McClaren is looking at improving, the left back role can't be put into doubt.

In the past two seasons, since joining Derby on a permanent basis, first choice left back Craig Forsyth has barely missed a minute of Championship football - starting in all possible 73 matches, including the three play-off matches last season.

The Scotland international has proven to be an inspired signing by Nigel Clough, who initially brought him in from Watford to play left midfield, but has since gone on to become one of, if not the, best left sided defenders in the division.

Nevertheless, the comments made by McClaren indicate that, come February, the ever-present Forsyth could have competition for his place in the team at the iPro and he would need to keep on top of his game.
