The young winger isn't as close to signing a new contract as previously thought.
It had been widely rumoured that the Liverpool star was close to agreeing a contract extension at the club following negotiations with the England winger’s representatives.
According to the Guardian, those talks were held on Monday by Liverpool chief executive Ian Ayre and a new long-term deal was to be signed imminently.
TalkSport are now claiming otherwise, however, with their reporter Warren Haughton believing a new contract is far from being agreed.
“There were suggestions he had agreed or was very close to extending his stay at Liverpool. My understanding is he is nowhere near agreeing a new contract with Liverpool,” Haughton told Drivetime.
“They have been speaking for a good few months now and he has already turned down one contract offer and they are nowhere near agreeing any new contract at all.”
If Talksport are correct, then it will come as disappointing news to Liverpool fans, who will naturally be keen to see their young starlet signed to the club for the foreseeable future.
Sterling broke into the Anfield set up last year, playing a large role in his side's title challenge and earning a call up to England’s World Cup squad.
This season has proven tougher for the youngster, though, as Liverpool have struggled following the departure of Luis Suarez and the long injury to Daniel Sturridge.
However, a recent change in formation has seen the winger rekindle last season’s form in a more central role.
