On this day: Arsene Wenger praises lethal Lukas Podolski; Manchester United linked with Gundogan

Lukas Podolski 3 Germany

On the 10th January 2014 what were the stories that dominated the football landscape? Including Arsenal and Manchester United.

Let's cast our eyes back to this exact day, the 10th January 2015, but a year earlier.

What were the main tales from that day? What big events were happening in Premier League football?

Here are some of the big scoops from the 10th January 2014…

Podolski love

A year ago today and Arsene Wenger was waxing lyrical about the qualities of German forward Lukas Podolski.

The Gunners boss was talking as the German was approaching a return to full fitness following a thigh problem and he said of the former Bayern Munich star:

"He's certainly one of the best finishers I've ever seen. When he is physically ready, he will of course help us. If there's one you want to see in front of the goal in a shooting position, it's him."

A year on and Podolski has recently been loaned out to Inter Milan and the World Cup winner accused of Wenger of a lack of respect upon his exit.

Certainly not as amicable a year on.

United want Gundogan

A year ago today and reports in the Mirror were claiming that Manchester United were readying a £24 million bid for Borussia Dortmund midfielder Ilkay Gundogan.

The talented German was yet to sign a new deal at the club and was being heavily linked with an exit, with United the favourites to snap him up.

However he went on to miss the entire of 2013-14 with a back injury and has struggled upon his return, with Dortmund sitting second from bottom in the Bundesliga table.

That has seen him linked with United once again, but at a reduced fee of around £16 million, in recent days.
