Mesut Ozil’s return a boost for Arsenal, but doesn’t solve key issues

The Germany international could feature this weekend against Stoke, but the Gunners have other concerns ahead of the game.

Arsenal fans will be glad to see club record signing Mesut Ozil close to a return to action, with the German playmaker available for selection for this Sunday’s clash with Stoke.

The former Real Madrid man has not featured for the Gunners since October due to a knee injury but has revealed on social media that he will be in the reckoning to feature against the Potters this weekend.

Ozil’s return is an important one, as on his day the diminutive German’s range of passing, vision and skill are enough to decide a tight game in his team’s favour.

The World Cup winner started his time in England in impressive form but suffered a slump in performances before getting injured last year.

Given the astronomical transfer fee that the Emirates Stadium outfit outlaid to bring him to London, much is expected of Ozil.

The old adage that form is temporary and class is permanent relates here, and there is every chance that Ozil can breath fresh life into the Arsenal attack and be a real star for the side in the remainder of the campaign.

However, despite his return being a boost, Arsenal still have considerable issues that they must deal with if they are to push on and have a successful second half to the season.

The combative and hard-working Stoke side will put physical pressure on a Gunners side that lacks enforcers and will be buoyed by winning the reverse fixture earlier in the season.

With issues to resolve in goal after Wojciech Szczesny’s poor recent performances and disciplinary issues, the lack of strength in depth at centre-half and injuries to key central midfielders, Stoke will be quietly confident of getting a result on Sunday.

Ozil’s return is a plus point for the Gunners and it could be the spark the side craves in the attacking third. However, issues at the other end of the pitch could well continue to blight the North London side’s season.
