Manchester United star and reported target named in 2014 UEFA Team of the Year

Angel Di Maria was the only player from the Premier League to make the list.

Manchester United ace Angel di Maria was the only Premier League representative to be named in UEFA’s Team of the Year for 2014, as reported by Spanish publication Mundo Deportivo.

The Argentine international’s memorable highlights of 2014, however, were not spent gracing the Old Trafford pitch, but instead donning the famous White at the Santiago Bernabeu.

Before his £59.7 million move to the Red Devils, Di Maria posted his best ever season of his career in the Spanish capital as Madrid won a Champions League and Copa Del Rey cup double.

Aside from his enthralling cup success, the 26-year-old was outstanding in the Spanish top flight – notching 17 assists from a rather unorthodox central midfield position.

Since joining Louis van Gaal’s side, Di Maria’s debut campaign has been hampered with a succession of niggling injuries, but he has shown flashes of why United shelled out big for his services in the summer.

Cristiano Ronaldo, Lionel Messi and Arjen Robben are among other renowned stars to make the UEFA XI, but one other member who may interest United supporters is reported target Diego Godin.

According to various media outlets, the central defender has been linked with a move to Old Trafford during this January transfer window, and it’s easy to understand why given his marvellous 2014.

The Uruguayan was instrumental in helping Atletico Madrid pip Spain’s big two to the La Liga championship, scoring the equalising goal at Barcelona on the final day which won them the title.

Described as a tough-tackling defender with exceptional positional play and leadership skills, Godin is the ideal player for Van Gaal’s so-called shaky defence, but he certainly won’t be available on the cheap.
